Sheriff Tiraspol couldn't have prepared any better for their first ever meeting with three-time European champions Manchester United than winning their last three matches ‘to nil’. All three of those fixtures, including their 3-0 UEFA Europa League (UEL) win over Omonia Nicosia, came after they led 1-0 at the break, so they’ll be targeting another strong start.
That would give them a chance of making it five home games without defeat (W3, D1) and as all four of those matches produced fewer than three goals, the opening strike could shape the outcome of this game. That proved the case in their only previous experience of hosting an English side when Sheriff trailed 1-0 at half-time en route to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur back in 2013.
Despite losing their UEL opener 1-0 to Real Sociedad, Man United will be clear favourites to win here after winning their four prior matches before that defeat, two of them with clean sheets. They haven’t played since that loss following the death of Queen Elizabeth II so have had plenty of time to analyse what went wrong and work out how they can make an impact on Europe this term.
This will be a new experience though as neither Man United nor coach Erik ten Hag have previously faced a Moldovan club. They can glean some insight from midfielders Christian Eriksen, who laid on assists home and away when playing for Tottenham against Sheriff in 2013, and Casemiro, who was part of the Real Madrid side that won 3-0 here last term after being humbled by Sheriff 2-1 at home.

Players to watch: Sheriff’s Iyayi Atiemwen opened the scoring with three of his last five goals while Man United’s Jadon Sancho did likewise in two of their last five matches, both times inside the opening 25 minutes.

Hot streak: Man United have scored one or two goals in each of their last eight European games on foreign soil (W3, D2, L3).
